Dr. MacMillan’s Presentation: Living Well and Dying Well – Palliative Care Stories and Opportunities
Death is unavoidable – a destination we are all walking towards. Although death is an inescapable reality that injures the community, cultural pressures and contemporary realities often render us ill-equipped to enter the sacred work of supporting those living with a life limiting illness.
Palliative care is available from the moment of a serious diagnosis and is offered alongside treatment rather than instead of it. Its goal is to help people live well through illness and, when the time comes, die well.
It also seeks to help loved ones care well and grieve well. Exploring existing local palliative care initiatives and imagining future opportunities for supporting the dying and their loved ones is fertile ground for nurturing the seeds of healing communities.
